This course consists of 5 modules outlined below:

Module 1: The Social Impact of Drinking
Once you’ve finished this module, you should be able to:

  • Correctly define terms relating to the sale or serving of alcohol in the state of California.
  • Describe the positive and negative impacts of alcohol sales on the community.
  • Discuss the cost to the community for the overuse of alcohol.
  • Describe your role as a responsible server of alcohol in public establishments.
  • State the intent of California laws relating to alcohol sales to minors, intoxicated persons, and Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Module 2: The Impact of Alcohol on the Body
After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  • Discuss the effects of alcohol on the body.
  • Describe the danger associated with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.
  • Recognized the signs of potential intoxication.
  • Correctly define Blood Alcohol Concentration, and
  • Understand factors which and impact the severity of intoxication.

Module 3: State Laws and Regulations
After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  • Discuss the requirements for mandatory Alcohol Server Certification as of July 1, 2021, in the State of California.
  • Define terms related to the sale and service of alcohol in the State of California.
  • Identify the different categories of crimes in the State of California.
  • Discuss the different forms of liability a licensee or employee might face for violating California state rules and regulations.
  • Discuss California state laws regarding the service of alcohol.
  • Understand how California state laws regarding the sale and service of alcohol are enforced.
  • Understand that local jurisdictions may have stricter local ordinances that must also be adhered to.

Module 4: Alcohol Sales or Service to Minors or Intoxicated Patrons
After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  • Discuss the purposes for checking identification prior to serving or selling alcohol.
  • Describe the characteristics of a legally acceptable ID.
  • List the types of legally acceptable IDs.
  • Discuss factors that make an ID unacceptable.
  • Identify elements of a valid California Real ID and elements of a valid California Federal non-compliant ID.
  • Identify elements that might indicate a false or fake ID.
  • Describe techniques for checking ID.
  • Discuss a server’s right to refuse service.
  • Discuss avoiding serving an obviously intoxicated patron.
  • List times when it is appropriate to refuse service.
  • Discuss techniques for refusing service.
  • Identify signs that a patron might be under the influence of medications or other drugs.

Module 5: Management Policies supporting the Prevention of Alcohol Sales or Service to Minors or Intoxicated Patrons
After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  • Understand the duties of the licensee to create a guide for employees who sell or serve alcoholic beverages including the benefits of having such policies in place.
  • Describe the Critical Policy Elements for Responsible Beverage Service.
  • Understand what the incident log is and what it is used for.
  • Describe the importance of having policies in place regarding discrimination prohibitions, as well as monitoring patron’s alcohol intake and minors seeking alcoholic services.
  • Understand guidelines for the effective development and use of policies for the service of alcoholic beverages for consumption to the public.
